The story

Ripples on Water

The bowl is carved from a cross-cut of the trunk, so the pith shows at the bottom and the growth rings rise up the sides like ripples from a thrown stone.

Elm is stubborn to work, but in a finished piece it gives a deep chocolate color and a density that the years won't wear down. It is finished with a hard-wearing oil.

About the species

Elm Ulmus

Elm is tough, interlocked wood that is almost impossible to split: for centuries it was used for wheel hubs and anything that had to take a blow. In return it has one of the most expressive figures of all our species.
