The story

A root that darkened in the earth

Bog oak is wood that has lain for a long time in wet ground. Its tannins react with iron from the soil, and the wood darkens from within — to graphite and almost black.

A burl root is the most unpredictable part of a tree. Combined with the bog darkening, it gives a figure no stain could ever reproduce.

About the species

Burl a growth on a trunk or root

A burl is a growth on a tree's trunk or root in which the fibers twist in every direction. It gives the most complex figure wood can have, and it cannot be grown on purpose: every burl is an accident decades in the making.

About the species

Oak Quercus

Oak is the benchmark of strength. Bog oak, which has lain for a long time in wet soil or water, darkens and develops graphite, almost black streaks — a material that cannot be imitated artificially.
