The story
How this piece came to be
Japanese tableware values simple form and honest material. Plane suits this perfectly: an almost unadorned square, with the grain doing all the work.

About the species
Oriental plane Platanus orientalis
Sochi has centuries-old plane trees, known locally as chinars. Quarter-sawn, plane wood shows a distinctive lace-like figure of medullary rays, which woodworkers prize it for.
