The story
A Daisy from a Chestnut Butt Log
The base of an old chestnut is never round: near the ground the trunk spreads into root buttresses, and the cross-cut comes out shaped like a flower. This round is from such a butt log, with petals, rings and the cracks that time has left.
At first it was meant to become a commissioned side table; then that order was dropped because of the hole in the round, and the decision was made that this daisy would become a dining table. I flattened the round on a router sled and worked the edge by hand. Rough shaping doesn't take long, but the finishing takes patience.
Now the round is cast into a circular resin form: the wooden petals stay visible all the way through, and the circle gathers them into a calm shape. I post the process on the channel, so you can follow along and reserve the finished table.

About the species
Sweet chestnut Castanea sativa
Sweet chestnut is a tree of the Western Caucasus and the Black Sea coast, an heir to the ancient Colchis forests. Its wood resembles oak: bold growth rings, a warm honey tone and plenty of tannins, so chestnut tolerates moisture well and lasts for decades. Old trees often have a hollow heart — and those trunks give the most striking rounds.
